The three key aspects that EcoVadis assesses for each sustainability criteria:
- Policies (weight: 25%) - Evaluates the quality, scope and governance of a company's sustainability policies and commitments.

How often are EcoVadis scores updated?
EcoVadis score updates occur annually through a reassessment process. While it's not mandatory to do annual assessments for EcoVadis, it's important to note that an expired scorecard could leave you with nothing to share with trading partners, potentially impacting your business relationships and reputation.
If you want to improve more rapidly than the average company, don’t let your scorecard expire. If you stick to the annual cycle, you will have more iterations of your sustainability management systems than most companies on EcoVadis, which means you will improve more quickly. Consider signing up for EcoVadis Essentials, my free email-based course and start learning how to improve.
EcoVadis Reassessment Frequency
- Your EcoVadis scorecard is valid for 12 months after it is issued.
- To maintain a valid and up-to-date EcoVadis rating, you must undergo a yearly reassessment before your current scorecard expires.
- The reassessment involves completing the EcoVadis questionnaire again, providing updated documentation and evidence of your sustainability policies, actions and performance over the past year.
- EcoVadis recommends initiating the reassessment process well before the 12-month validity period of the previous scorecard ends to ensure a seamless transition to the newly updated rating.
- For some coordinated assessment campaigns organised by EcoVadis, there may be specific shortened timelines or deadlines may be set for companies to complete their reassessments.
In summary, EcoVadis scores are updated annually through a reassessment process. This regular cadence not only helps you maintain an active, up-to-date sustainability rating but also provides an opportunity to iterate and improve more quickly, reflecting your current performance and initiatives.

What factors influence the EcoVadis score?
The factors influencing your EcoVadis score are grouped into four main areas, that EcoVadis calls themes. Each theme has multiple criteria that EcoVadis rates. These are more commonly known as the 21 sustainability criteria. I go into much more depth in EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course to help improve your rating, where we’ll explore EcoVadis themes, criteria, and what you need to do to get a good score.
EcoVadis Themes and Sustainability Criteria
1. Environment
This theme evaluates your company's environmental policies, actions, and results related to sustainability criteria like energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, waste management, resource use, and environmental compliance.
2. Labor & Human Rights
Under this theme, EcoVadis assesses your company's labour practices, employee health and safety measures, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and human rights policies.
3. Ethics
The Ethics theme covers your company's code of conduct, anti-corruption measures, information security, and fair business practices.
4. Sustainable Procurement
This theme focuses on the sustainability practices within your company's supply chain, including supplier assessments, responsible sourcing policies, and risk management approaches.
Within each theme, EcoVadis conducts a comprehensive evaluation of specific management indicators such as your company's policies, actions taken to implement those policies, and tangible results achieved. The assessment methodology takes into account your company's size, industry, and geographical location, providing a thorough and fair evaluation that is contextualised to your business.
The overall EcoVadis score ranges from 0 to 100. It is calculated by combining the weighted scores from the four themes mentioned above, considering the relative importance assigned to different criteria based on your company's industry and risk exposure.
Additionally, EcoVadis may factor in any relevant findings from their 360° Watch service, which monitors public sources for potential issues your company has had related to corruption, human rights violations, environmental controversies and more.
In summary, your company's EcoVadis score is primarily influenced by your performance across the four themes of Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, and Sustainable Procurement, as well as your size, industry, location, and any relevant risk findings.
My commitment is to help you achieve higher scores. If you need specific assistance, I am here to support you on your EcoVadis journey. Let’s work together. Here’s how I can assist you.

EcoVadis Score Improvement Strategies
1. Prioritise Low-Scoring Themes
Focus first on strengthening the themes (Environment, Labour & Human Rights, Ethics, Sustainable Procurement) with lower scores relative to your overall score. Improving weaker themes will likely have the most significant impact on raising your overall scores and rating.
2. Address Gaps in Policies and Processes
Many areas for improvement stem from a lack of formal policies, documented processes, or quantitative targets. Develop comprehensive policies and processes aligned with EcoVadis principles and best practices, especially for highly weighted Activated Criteria.
3. Strengthen Evidence and Documentation
Provide comprehensive and valid evidence covering the latest reporting period to support your questionnaire responses. Common gaps include declaring actions without proof of implementation, submitting incomplete/outdated documents, or neglecting to upload supporting documents.
4. Leverage Scorecard Feedback
Carefully review the feedback, strengths, weaknesses and suggested corrective actions outlined in your EcoVadis scorecard. Don’t forget to look at the comments the EcoVadis analyst made about your assessment. Prioritise addressing high-impact areas with major weaknesses first.
5. Establish KPI Monitoring
Identify and continuously track relevant sustainability KPIs to ensure your initiatives remain on track and to report performance.
6. Prepare Data Collection
Anticipate data requirements well in advance and proactively gather/organise necessary information for a smooth reassessment process.
7. Communicate Policies and Progress
Ensure sustainability policies are actively communicated throughout your company and externally. Report on quantitative performance results against targets.
By systematically addressing weaknesses, strengthening management systems, providing robust documentation, and continuously monitoring progress, companies can drive meaningful improvements in their EcoVadis rating over time.

What are common EcoVadis mistakes to avoid?
Preparing well for your EcoVadis assessment is half the battle. Here are some common mistakes you should avoid when improving your EcoVadis scores. Also, sign up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course, to help you improve your EcoVadis score quickly.
Avoid these EcoVadis mistakes
1. Not leveraging the scorecard feedback effectively
The EcoVadis scorecard provides detailed insights, strengths, weaknesses, and suggested areas for improvement. The EcoVadis analyst may also make comments related to improvements. Failing to thoroughly review and act upon this feedback is a missed opportunity.
2. Waiting too long to start improvement initiatives
Companies often approach consultants just before their reassessment, leaving little time to implement meaningful changes, or to be strategic about the overall approach. Begin working on improvement plans immediately after receiving after receiving your scorecard.
3. Lack of clear roles and responsibilities
Not assigning clear ownership for sustainability initiatives, data collection, and responding to the EcoVadis questionnaire can lead to siloed efforts and incomplete information.
4. Insufficient evidence and documentation
Uploading inadequate, outdated or irrelevant documentation can result in criteria being scored incorrectly. Comprehensive evidence aligned with EcoVadis requirements is crucial.
5. Overlooking criteria EcoVadis activated for your company's industry
EcoVadis identifies specific sustainability issues based on your industry. Prioritise and comprehensively address these specific issues to maximise your EcoVadis scores.

How much does a EcoVadis subscription cost?
Like many things in life, it depends. Rated companies must pay an annual EcoVadis subscription cost. But before you subscribe, come and explore the EcoVadis assessment methodology and learn how to improve your EcoVadis score and rating quickly. Sign up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course.
EcoVadis pricing information

2. Access to the EcoVadis Platform
- Your scorecard
- Collaboration and improvement tools, such as the Corrective Action Plan feature

4. Performance Sharing: The capability to share your company's performance with all customer requests.
According to the EcoVadis pricing page, the Premium, Select, and Corporate subscription levels provide additional features over the Basic subscription.
A brief word about the Basic subscription. Think back to your student days, when you studied hard and ensured your expensive school fees were not wasted. And you did it, you aced your exams! On graduation day the school proclaimed: “Congratulations on your excellent grades! You are one of our best! However, your transcript will remain confidential. You can’t publish it in your resume or job applications unless you upgrade to our premium package.”
This is roughly what EcoVadis does with the Basic subscription. It’s silly, not very customer-centric and I wouldn’t be surprised if it does them more harm than good.
The exact pricing for Corporate plans is not provided, but they are higher tiers aimed at larger enterprises and offer more advanced features and services.
Some additional points on pricing:
- Multi-year commitment discounts are available
- Pricing is subject to change annually based on inflation and country

When is EcoVadis due?
EcoVadis assessments don’t work with a due date. However, scorecards are only valid for 12 months. So, if you want an active scorecard throughout time, you need to reassess before your current scorecard expires. Before you reassess you should improve your sustainability management systems. By signing up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course to help you improve your score and rating.Higher ratings give you a competitive edge.
EcoVadis Scorecard Validity and Reassessment
- EcoVadis scorecards are valid for 12 months following publication. In EcoVadis’ preferred world you undergo reassessment annually.
- EcoVadis advises subscribers to take a proactive approach to the reassessment process. By initiating reassessment before your current scorecard expires, you can ensure an up-to-date sustainability rating for stakeholders.
- Before starting reassessment, work on implementing changes by 1) reviewing guidance in your previous scorecard and 2) establishing a progress report based on corrective actions implemented since the prior assessment. This is how you show progress.
- Unlike other sustainability ratings companies, such as CDP and S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index, EcoVadis does not have a universal submission due date for companies. However, EcoVadis’ methodology implies that ratings need to be renewed annually.
My commitment is to help you achieve higher scores. If you need specific assistance, I am here to support you on your EcoVadis journey. Let’s work together. Here’s how I can assist you.
What is the EcoVadis submission deadline?
Unlike some other sustainability ratings companies, such as CDP and S&P Dow Jones Sustainability Index, there is no universal EcoVadis submission deadline. Once initiated, the standard process allows around three weeks to complete the questionnaire, with flexibility for extensions.
To retain an active rating, you must re-initiate the full assessment process before your current scorecard expires. Before you reassess you should improve your sustainability management systems. By signing up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course, you can learn how to do this. Higher ratings give you a competitive edge.
Understanding EcoVadis Submission Deadlines
1. Download the EcoVadis questionnaire Excel before you initiate the EcoVadis assessment process so you can start working on the questions earlier.
2. When you initiate the standard EcoVadis assessment process, you are generally given 3 weeks to complete and submit the questionnaire after it is opened.
3. If you need more time to gather documentation and complete the questionnaire within that initial 3-week window, you can request an extension from EcoVadis through the portal.
4. Once you submit your completed questionnaire, EcoVadis's expert analysis phase usually takes 6-8 weeks before they receive their scorecard and rating.
Note: There have been periods where I experienced lead times of 8-12 weeks in the past.
5. Your EcoVadis scorecard is valid for 12 months after you receive it. To maintain your rating, you need to undergo reassessment before this 12-month period ends. To be clear, I’ve seen many companies not bothering to do this or not being able to keep up with this cadence (while implementing sufficient improvements between submissions).
6. EcoVadis also makes use of assessment campaigns, where requesting companies invite multiple trading partners (suppliers) simultaneously. These types of campaigns have different lead times. Learn about EcoVadis Assessment Campaigns.

How long does the EcoVadis assessment process take?
Every company’s EcoVadis journey is unique. Below you’ll find some typical timelines for the EcoVadis assessment process. But let’s face it. You’ve got many other sustainability and compliance-related projects to complete throughout the year, like preparing your UNGC CoP submission, drafting your sustainability report, engaging in other sustainability rating programs. If you want to learn about how to schedule these throughout the year in a logical fashion where the output of one feeds into the next, then consider signing up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free e-mail-based course about improving your EcoVadis rating.
EcoVadis Assessment Process Steps
1. Questionnaire Completion:
- You have 3 weeks to complete the EcoVadis questionnaire after initiation.
- However, it is common for companies to request an extension from EcoVadis if you need more time to gather documentation and thoroughly answer the questions.
2. Expert Analysis by EcoVadis:
- Once you submit your company’s completed questionnaire and supporting documents, the expert analysis phase by EcoVadis typically takes 6-8 weeks.
- This analysis timeframe can vary depending on the complexity of your company's information and the number of documents submitted.
- I have also experienced 8-12 weeks in the past.
3. Validity Period of Scorecard:
- After the expert analysis, you will receive your EcoVadis scorecard which is valid for 12 months.
- To maintain an active EcoVadis rating, you need to undergo reassessment annually before you current scorecard expires.
In summary, the key timelines are 3 weeks for initial questionnaire completion (you can request extensions). 6-8 weeks for EcoVadis' expert analysis (usually). Scorecards have a 12-month validity period. Annual reassessment required to renew rating.
The full cycle from starting the questionnaire to receiving the scorecard can take around 2-4 months, with the expert analysis being the longest phase at 6-8 weeks typically. Companies then need to repeat this process annually for reassessment within the 12-month validity window. You are on the treadmill of continuous improvement.

Sharing and Publicising EcoVadis Scores and Ratings
How to share the EcoVadis scorecard?
You’ve done the assessment and received your scorecard. Now you want to share your EcoVadis rating logo far and wide. Remember improving your EcoVadis score is more important. By signing up for EcoVadis Essentials, a free email-based course, you can learn how to do this. Higher ratings give you a competitive edge.
So how do you share and EcoVadis scorecard you are happy with? There are several ways for you to do this, depending on your subscription tier. You may be limited in your EcoVadis scorecard sharing.
Sharing your EcoVadis scorecard
1. Through the EcoVadis Platform
- Grant access when you receive requests from trading partners through the EcoVadis platform, typically business partners or companies in your supply chain.
- Click "Share my scorecard" next to the company's name in your EcoVadis account. This will share the scorecard with all EcoVadis platform users at that company.
2. Manage Permissions
- You can manage permissions through your EcoVadis account to control who can access your scorecard and supporting documents.
- Document access: You can grant access to supporting documents like policies, reports, certifications. Most companies don’t do this.
3. Public Access
- For Premium, Select, or Corporate EcoVadis subscriptions, companies can share their scorecard publicly.
- Some third-party platforms like supply chain management software can integrate with EcoVadis to display a company's scorecard, with the company's consent.
- You can download your EcoVadis Scorecard PDF and share it off platform.
As you can see, the devil is in the details of your EcoVadis subscription, so I suggest you look at EcoVadis’ website to see how and what you can share depending on your subscription.
